Museum Exhibit
Ocean Drive To Marine Drive: Mapping a Century of Deco | Miami Beach-Mumbai (1925–2025) celebrated Miami and Mumbai’s unique cultural and visual kindredness in the year that marked a century of The Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels Modernes; the 1925 Paris design show that gave the movement its name and identity. Relying on a rich mix of academic research, multimedia, archival photographs, oral history narratives, and an exclusive display of rare Deco artefacts and furniture handpicked from private collections, Ocean Drive to Marine Drive hoped to make connections between material objects, spaces, urban heritage and social history by spotlighting the pioneering Deco practices across the ‘City of Dreams’ and the ‘Billion-Dollar Sandbar’.
Symposium
Dr Bhau Daji Lad Museum & Art Deco Alive! presented a day of ideas exchange, inspired debate and drove conversations around heritage advocacy and preservation in a new developing India by bringing together leading voices in architecture, design, policy making, academia, and the arts. Through a series of illustrated presentations and discussions, we hoped to acknowledge the lasting influence of the timeless Art Deco movement on our urbanscape and modern living.
Block Party
Veer Nariman Road’s legacy eateries and hotels joined us in a neighbourhood block party to celebrate their legendary address—Churchgate Street—once the epicentre of entertainment, public dining and jazz. We expected deals, discounts, special retro menus and classic cocktails. Lights, buntings, a photo booth, and roving musicians turned back the clock.
Deco Walks
The walk started outside Astoria Hotel which housed Venice, the restaurant where Chris Perry led a quintet, and Braz Gonsalves was a star in the 1960s. The Ritz opposite the road housed the Little Hut where Shirley Myers entertained guests. Highlights of the walk included The New India Assurance Building, Soona Mahal that once housed Parisian Dairy and Talk of the Town, The Ambassador Hotel, The InterContinental...
Museum Exhibit
The exhibition celebrated the centennial of the Art Deco era, marking 100 years of design and architecture that began in Paris and spread worldwide. It highlighted the parallels between Miami Beach and Mumbai, two nautical cities where Art Deco left a profound imprint, from defining their skylines to shaping their culture and style. From Ocean Drive to Marine Drive, this exhibition went beyond architecture to reveal Art Deco’s influence across creative disciplines. Drawings, memorabilia, furniture, typography, and everyday objects highlighted how Art Deco shaped modern design, graphic arts, and cultural life. This cross-disciplinary exhibition reflected the total design philosophy that defined the Art Deco movement.
Symposium
The Art Deco Alive! Symposium, hosted in collaboration with The Wolfsonian-FIU, brought together leading voices in architecture, design, and real estate for a dynamic exploration of Miami Beach’s iconic Art Deco legacy alongside Mumbai’s vibrant Deco heritage. Featuring expert panels led by experienced moderators, the symposium delved into the cultural significance, global influence, and future of Art Deco in both cities and beyond.
1920's Cocktail Party
The celebrations for ‘Ocean Drive to Marine Drive: Mapping a Century of Art Deco Across Miami Beach & Mumbai’, presented by Art Deco Alive!, opened in style with a festive cocktail evening at the Art Deco Museum. Guests were welcomed with cocktails and hors d’oeuvres inspired by the glamour of the Jazz Age, setting the perfect tone for an evening that bridged Miami Beach and Mumbai. A live jazz band filled the museum with the rhythms of the era, evoking the spirit of the 1920s and 30s when Art Deco first flourished across both cities. Surrounded by the very architecture and design the exhibition celebrated, attendees had the chance to mingle with collectors, curators, and cultural leaders while previewing the exhibition. The evening honored the shared legacy of Art Deco across continents and marked the beginning of a weekend devoted to celebrating design, heritage, and community.
