Art Deco Alive!
A Global Design Legacy, Reimagined
Art Deco Alive! is a cross-continental celebration marking the centenary of the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes (Paris, 1925)—the landmark exhibition that gave birth to the international design style now known as Art Deco.
Emerging in Paris and travelling across the world through the 1920s and 1930s, Art Deco inspired architects, artists, and designers from Mexico City to Shanghai, evolving into a truly global language shaped by local cultures, climates, and aspirations.
Mumbai × Miami
At the heart of Art Deco Alive! is a distinctive juxtaposition: Mumbai and Miami, two tropical cities nearly 9,000 miles apart, yet united by a shared architectural legacy. Together, they house the largest surviving clusters of Art Deco–inspired buildings anywhere in the world.
Mumbai is home to flamboyant picture palaces, stately public buildings, and intimate private residences characteristic of the 1930s–50s style. In 2018, South Mumbai’s Victorian Gothic and Art Deco Ensembles were designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, affirming the city’s commitment to preserving architectural diversity amid rapid urban change.
Miami expresses Art Deco through its iconic South Beach architecture—streamlined forms, pastel façades, and hotels that capture the glamour, optimism, and leisure culture of the Atlantic coast.
Beyond Architecture
Art Deco Alive! looks beyond buildings to honour the deeper Indo‑Latin cultural connections embedded within the Deco movement. These influences surface across music, food, dance, cinema, and popular culture—revealing Art Deco as a lived, multisensory experience rather than a static historical style.
The Festival
Scheduled for October 2025 in Miami and November 2025 in Mumbai, Art Deco Alive! is an open‑to‑public festival anchored by a Centennial Museum Exhibition, curated in collaboration with the Art Deco Mumbai Trust and the Miami Design Preservation League.
The exhibition offers a global overview of the Art Deco movement while focusing on the Mumbai–Miami dialogue through their iconic buildings, shared design language, and pioneering architects.
Conversations, Culture, and the City
The Art Deco Alive! Symposium brings together architects, conservationists, creative practitioners, and city administrators in dialogue. Complementing this are discussion series, documentary screenings, workshops for children, guided heritage walks, themed food and beverage pop‑ups, and cultural performances that animate the festival across both cities.
Our Vision
Art Deco Alive! is more than a festival. It is a cultural movement that connects continents, celebrates shared histories, and reimagines the future of heritage in a rapidly transforming world.
