Mumbai – DECO WORKSHOPS

Participants stepped into a world where Mumbai’s Art Deco heritage met hands-on printmaking in this immersive gel plate printing workshop. Using the city’s iconic Deco patterns as inspiration, they were guided through the playful, experimental process of gel plate monoprinting—layering textures, motifs, and marks to create striking compositions. They discovered how simple tools could produce rich, unexpected results as they explored repetition, rhythm, and pattern the Deco way. Techniques were demonstrated, but the magic lay in their own exploration—participants mixed, improvised, and pushed the process in directions that felt uniquely theirs. They walked away with a set of custom Art Deco–inspired postcards, printed by hand and crafted entirely by them.

Participants stepped into the living archive of Mumbai’s streets in this two-day exploration of typography, architecture, and memory. Led by visual artist Aashim Tyagi, the weekend began with a slow, attentive walk through Fort and Kala Ghoda—noticing hand-painted signs, fading letters, surfaces, and the quiet traces of change embedded in the city’s built landscape. They learned how to document these visual fragments with intention as they worked with light, framing, layers, and storytelling through images.

On the second day, they brought their observations into the studio and transformed them into a small, handmade zine—editing, printing, and sequencing photographs to shape their own narrative of the city. They walked away with a zine made by them, sharpened visual curiosity, and a new way of seeing Bombay through its streets, signs, and stories.
